FAQs

At Chris Moss Clocks, I specialise in the sale and restoration of fine antique longcase clocks, bracket clocks, and wall clocks.

On this page I’ll answer some of the most common questions about buying and restoring antique clocks, from authenticity and viewing appointments to delivery and ongoing care.

Whether you’re considering a clock for your home or wish to have a family heirloom professionally restored, I hope these answers help you understand my approach and what to expect.

What types of antique clocks do you sell?

I have unrivalled knowledge of fine antique longcase clocks, bracket clocks, and wall clocks from the 18th and 19th centuries. Every clock I sell has been carefully restored to full working order while retaining its original character and patina. Each piece is individually selected for quality, craftsmanship, and authenticity.

Do you restore antique clocks that I already own?

Yes. I offer antique clock restoration for privately owned longcase, bracket, and wall clocks. Every restoration is sympathetic to the clock’s period and materials, ensuring that mechanical work and case conservation are carried out to museum-standard quality. Please note that I do not work on modern clocks or watches.

What’s the difference between clock restoration and clock repair?

A repair usually means fixing a fault so the clock runs again. Restoration goes further; it returns the clock to its original appearance and performance while preserving as much of the original material as possible. My focus is always on careful restoration rather than quick repair, ensuring the clock’s long-term value and integrity.

How do you ensure the authenticity of antique clocks for sale?

Every clock I sell is thoroughly examined, researched, and restored personally by me. I verify the maker, movement, dial, and case to confirm that all are correct for the period. Provenance is provided wherever possible, so buyers can be confident they are acquiring a genuine antique clock of lasting quality.

Can I view a clock before buying?

Yes, of course: viewings are welcome by appointment at my Somerset workshop and showroom. This allows you to see each clock in detail, hear it running, and discuss its history and restoration in person. Simply get in touch to arrange a convenient time.

Do you offer delivery or installation for large clocks?

Yes. I can arrange UK-wide delivery and professional installation, particularly for tall longcase clocks. Each clock is carefully transported, set up, and adjusted in its new home to ensure accurate timekeeping from day one.

How should I care for an antique longcase or bracket clock after purchase?

Keep your clock in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and damp. Dust the case lightly with a soft cloth and avoid using sprays or polishes. For the movement, I recommend a light service every few years. I’m happy to advise or arrange future servicing for any clock I’ve restored or sold.

Do you buy antique clocks?

Occasionally, yes. If you have a longcase, bracket, or wall clock you’re considering selling, I’m happy to take a look. I buy selectively and am always interested in clocks of good quality or historical importance.
